Lanzarote

Straddling the equator - the Canary Islands are a volcanic region off the north west coast of Africa - consisting of seven main and six smaller islands. They enjoy a constant temperature, springtime and summer, throughout the year with plenty of sunshine. Making it a very popular all year round destination. There are seven islands in the Canaries - divided into two provinces - Santa Cruz de Tenerife - which included the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera, and Hierro. Las Palmas - which includes the islands of - Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The landscape of each island is radically different - volcanic landscapes, dense forest, volcanoes, and desert. Lanzarote- just 125km from the coast of Africa and the fourth largest island- basks in almost constant sunshine, and has an abundance of sandy beaches, however, it is very different from its sister islands in landscape and climate. A visit to the volcanoes of Fire Mountain should be on your list of things to do - the area was declared a national park - Park Nacional de Timanfaya in 1968. At the top you will find the restaurant El Diablo where most of the grilled specialities are cooked in the 140 deg C heat that comes from the volcano itself. The result of the dramatic events of Timanfaya combined with the effects of the Atlantic resulted in the crater El Golfo where over time the ocean has eaten into the volcano leaving an emerald green lagoon which produces a magnificent array of colours depending on the position of the sun.
